Former Duke starting point guard Greg Paulus has been officially hired by Ohio State’s Thad Matta to be a video coordinator.

Paulus has been all over the NCAA circuit since his time with the Duke Blue Devils. After a four year rollercoacter basketball career at Duke he moved onto Syracuse to be their starting quarterback. In his one season under center, Paulus threw for 2,025 yards and 13 touchdowns leading the Orange to a 4-8 overall record.

Paulus the athlete then turned into Paulus the coach as he became a Navy assistant coach last season. Born in Medina, Ohio, Paulus now returns home to work with Thad Matta and Ohio State, who went 32-2 last season only to be upset in the Sweet 16 by Kentucky.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar feels slighted by no statue

by Joseph Landini

Michael Jordan stands outside of the United Center in Chicago. Ted Williams stands outside of Fenway Park in Boston. Even the fictional Rocky Balboa stands outside the Philadelphia Museum of art.

NBA great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar feels “slighted,” that a statue of himself is not standing outside of the Staples Center, the home of the Los Angeles Lakers. Abdul-Jabbar won five championships for the Lakers, and is the All-Time scoring leader in league history. Not only did he accomplish that, but he was also on the recieving end of six Most Valuable Player awards.

If a statue was made, it would be the sixth that stands outside the Staples Center. The other five are hockey great Wayne Gretzky, boxer Oscar De La Hoya, Chick Hearn, and NBA greats Jerry West and Magic Johnson. Abdul-Jabbar was quoted to say, “I don’t understand it. It is either an oversight, or they are taking me for granted.”

A Lakers spokesman, John Black, said that Abdul-Jabbar is next in line for a statue, but that there is no time set for the making of one. The Boston Celtics recently announced its plans for the building of a Bill Russell statue outside of the TD Bank Garden.
